Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? The movie starts out in the city with the stereotypical hustle and bustle lifestyle that drives everyone into the country. It just doesnt make sense. [5], Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times rated the film 1 stars and called it "an anthology of cliches" and "a thriller that thrills us only if we abandon all common sense". His wife, Leah, is a business executive who rises at 4:30 to hop a plane to her next big meeting. But no. With the locals becoming suspicious of them and Dale becoming increasingly unstable, Cooper and his family try to uncover the mystery regarding him and his former home before it's too late. They then meet the former owner, Dale Massie (STEPHEN DORFF), who states he just got out of prison and would like to work for them restoring the house back to its once prominent state. Rooms look beaten up, filled with the relics of the previous family, and then they are clean and neat and redone, while other rooms still have walls that barely hold the room together. For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, some instances of that occur in several scenes in the film. He is a psychopath who threatened to kill the Tilson family who moved to Dale's old home. Everything he does is after a look at the script, so that he appears, disappears, threatens, seems nice, looms, fades, pushes, doesn't push, all so that we in the audience can be frightened or, in my case, amused.
They then try to get away from the intruder through the dark house. This house is going to need a lot of work. We see the image of a somewhat decomposed and mummified face on a video playback. IIRC the family believes it's the father precisely because his headlights/front of the car is smashed. Either that or he was struck with some form of mental retardation, which is really unfair because Ive seen movies in the thriller genre before with someone suffering from mental retardation that did much better then Quaid did in this movie. In one scene, a persons bludgeoned body twitches in a pool of blood (viewers are spared the homicidal act itself). It's implied that Cooper realizes what happened with Dale's family immediately after his own family left, and Dale attacked within the following 12 hours. JUMP SCENES

Realizing he needs to figure out what happened at the manor, Cooper goes to interview Dale's father (CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER), who's in a nursing home, but all he gets out of him is something about the Devil's Throat. The movie is an anthology of cliches, not neglecting both the Talking Killer, who talks when he should be at work, and the reliable climax where both the villain and his victims go to a great deal of inconvenience to climb to a high place so that one of them can fall off. He only stops when the sheriff aims her gun at him. Cooper drives home while a bit intoxicated shortly after drinking many shots of liquor. All of this is eventually because the film never gives any solid idea of the passage of time. She has never got enough credit for her talent, and I think she is the perfect match to Quaid. He uses some profanity, drinks and drives, and becomes jealous of his wife.
